Youssef Chaabane was released on July 13, 2009.

Lebanese President Michel Sleiman granted on July 10th 2009 his pardon to Youssef Mahmoud Chaabane, who had been arbitrarily detained in Lebanon for more than 15 years.

The CLDH (Lebanese Center for Human Rights) welcomes the decision of the President and congratulates Youssef Chaabane and his family who have endured with such courage an injustice which lasted over 15 years.

The CLDH thanks the numerous individuals, institutions, human rights organizations and embassies who have contributed in many ways to support the case of Youssef Chaabane.

Youssef Chaabane, who was sentenced as a result of confessions extracted under torture by the Syrian intelligence services, has been claiming his innocence for 15 years. His case was supported almost unanimously by the public in Lebanon and abroad.

The presidential pardon does not render justice to Youssef Chaabane but gives him back his freedom.

RELEASE YOUSSEF CHAABANE!

15 years after his arrest, and despite the torture to which he was subjected by the Syrian Intelligence Services and the Lebanese Criminal Police in order to get him to confess, and even though he never stopped claiming innocence, the Palestinian Youssef Chaabane who is a resident of Lebanon is serving a life sentence.

This blog is a call to action, to quick action, in order to free Youssef Chaabane and to demand that the truth be told about this case.

CLDH is a local non-profit, non-political and independent Lebanese Human Rights organization based in Beirut. CLDH was created in 2006 by the French Lebanese Movement SOLIDA (Support for Lebanese detained arbitrarily) that is active since 1996 in the fight against arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance and impunity of the perpetrators of gross human rights violations. CLDH monitors the human rights situation in Lebanon, fights against enforced disappearance, impunity, arbitrary detention, and racism and provides rehabilitation to the victims of torture. CLDH is a founding member of the Euro-Med Federation against Enforced Disappearances (FEMED), a member of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) and of the SOS Torture Network of the World Organization against Torture (OMCT).
