ACAT France, a French Human Rights organization, asks the Lebanese authorities to release Youssef Chaabane immediatly.

Youssef Chaabane was released on July 13, 2009.

Lebanese President Michel Sleiman granted on July 10th 2009 his pardon to Youssef Mahmoud Chaabane, who had been arbitrarily detained in Lebanon for more than 15 years.

The CLDH (Lebanese Center for Human Rights) welcomes the decision of the President and congratulates Youssef Chaabane and his family who have endured with such courage an injustice which lasted over 15 years.

The CLDH thanks the numerous individuals, institutions, human rights organizations and embassies who have contributed in many ways to support the case of Youssef Chaabane.

Youssef Chaabane, who was sentenced as a result of confessions extracted under torture by the Syrian intelligence services, has been claiming his innocence for 15 years. His case was supported almost unanimously by the public in Lebanon and abroad.

The presidential pardon does not render justice to Youssef Chaabane but gives him back his freedom.
